It was the first time that I gave a speech in an international conference. Being a guest speaker and sharing my experience of climbing Mt. Everest to a huge number of people was one of the most memorable days of my life”, shares Kanchhi Maya Tamang after returning from Peru. Ms. Kanchhi Maya Tamang, a Trekking and Expedition Guide with Gurkha Encounters, went to Cajamarca, Peru on 6th and 7th February to attend the First Feminine Empowerment Conference. She had the honour to be the main speaker!
There were approximately 400 people in the audience from different sectors; from high level government officers to female victims of domestic violence. Kanchhi Maya’s speech was centered on her struggles when she worked as a domestic worker overseas in her teenage years and the challenges she had to face when climbing Mt. Everest. Her speech was to motivate those women who are suffering from domestic violence. Her aim was to show that one’s bravery and self-confidence can overcome such violence.
During her visit Kanchhi Maya also climbed Mt. Mateo in Peru. Becoming the first Nepalese woman to climb a Peruvian mountain. She proudly raised the logo of Gurkha Encounters on top of Mt. Mateo. She had planned to climb Pisco Mountain, but because of changes in the weather she chose Mt. Mateo as the alternative.
We are extremely proud of Kanchhi Maya!
